Prof. Richard Ferrero is Deputy Centre Head and Research Group Leader in the Centre for Innate Immunity at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research and holds an Adjunct Professor position at Monash University.

After completing his PhD in 1990 at the University of NSW, Prof. Ferrero took up a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Institut Pasteur, Paris. In 1994, he was appointed to a tenured researcher position. In 2004, he returned to Australia to take up an academic research/teaching position in the Department of Microbiology, Monash University. In 2009, he was recruited to Monash Institute of Medical Research, where he returned to full-time research. From 2010-2020, he held NHMRC Senior Research Fellowships.

His main research interests span the fields of Helicobacter pylori, bacterial extracellular vesicles, NOD-like receptor proteins and innate immunology. His research has translated to important fundamental and applied outcomes in the areas of bacterial pathogenesis, H. pylori vaccine development and innate immunology.

This research has been published in leading journals i.e. Cell Host & Microbe, Gastroenterology, Immunity, Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, Nature Communications, Nature Reviews Immunology, Nature Immunology and PNAS.

He is an Associate Editor for Helicobacter, a member of the International Scientific Committee of “The International Workshop on Pathogenesis in Helicobacter infections”, and reviews abstracts to all the major international conferences in the field of H. pylori research.
